Terms and Concepts

One of the challenges many people facing when learning about the history of Aotearoa and how to apply Te Tiriti o Waitangi to their mahi, is that we’ve heard the key concepts and terms talked about in different ways by different people; often with confidence and authority regardless of accuracy.

Here you can find more content on some of the key aspects of the course, we link to some of this material within the modules, but this is also a repository for those of you who want to understand some of the background sources or more detail on the events and ideas mentioned in the course. You can also jump from each of the terms below to where it is used in the course.

The content here is structured into three broad themes, concepts relating Te Ao Māori – the Māori world and world view – the Treaty, and Colonisation.

You can select each term below by clicking on its text to jump to its definition.
