Course Overview

This page is the entry point for the modules that make up our course. There are six modules, we recommend starting with the Introduction Module.

You can also click on the links at the bottom of this page to get familiar with some of the terminology used in the course, find other resources, or commonly asked questions. If you’d like assistance with how to navigate the site or some of the activities, check out our Navigation page.

This module introduces you to …. some of the foundational thinking that you will need and use to get the most from the rest of this course.

One of the key ideas about the Treaty is that it is essentially about relationships; so in this module we will look at some of the relationships amongst different groups of people who played key parts in the Treaty, especially their motives for wanting it.

There is a great deal of controversy about what the Treaty of Waitangi means, or what people think it should mean, today.  Understanding what it actually says and how it was understood in 1840 should help you to clarify your own views.

In this module you will learn about how colonisation of NZ was similar to elsewhere and how this was the opposite both of the pre-Treaty relationships and of the commitments made by the Crown in the Treaty.

Māori had been protesting about Treaty violations since the 1840s, and there had been sporadic responses by the government, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that systemic changes began to be introduced.  This module provides an overview of the current status of those efforts.
